Matthew Bishop is an award-winning journalist, convenor and founder of four high-impact social innovations. An Oxford-educated economist, executive and advisor, Bishop brings deep expertise in international media, economics, social innovation, technology and philanthropy.
Now the Any Other Business columnist for The Observer, Bishop was a writer and editor at The Economist for over 25 years, including a decade as the magazine’s New York Bureau Chief, where as well as contributing to the magazine's influential editorial he helped launch and host some of the magazine’s first podcasts and ideated and moderated several conferences. In 2018, he joined Rockefeller Foundation to lead the Bellagio Center on Lake Como, Italy, focused on ideas-to-action convening focused on tackling some of the world’s biggest challenges.
Bishop co-founded the Social Progress Index, an increasingly influential new measure of how well a society serves its citizens; the #GivingTuesday movement, which harnesses social media to celebrate giving and drive charity that is more effective; 17 Rooms and Catalyst Now. He served on the board of the Knight-Bagehot Foundation and as a final judge of the Loeb Awards for business journalism, and is a judge of the Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling.
